I have a team member that will agree they aren't meeting expectations in an area and then won't follow through. As a manager I'm finding it hard to keep track of when exactly they fall on the wagon and I cannot for the life of me keep them on track. It's causing other teammates to suffer.

Thanks for sharing this, Darian. That sounds really difficult, especially when it is starting to affect the rest of the team. I would focus on making the expectations, actions and review dates really clear in writing, so you are not relying on memory or constantly trying to keep them on track. It may also help you get a clearer picture of where the responsibility sits and what support or next steps are appropriate.

Layering the cadence like this gives each conversation room to breathe instead of cramming everything into one meeting.

Protecting that fortnightly no-agenda call is a small habit that builds a lot of trust over time.

Keeping salary talk separate from daily feedback lets both conversations stay genuine.

This system really shines once the daily praise and honest check-ins become second nature, not just something scheduled.

Exactly this, Bastian. The structure helps, but it only really works when praise, feedback and honest conversations are happening consistently between the meetings too. Thank you for such a thoughtful comment.

It's hard when people actually just hate having to think of goals. We have a couple of people who just don't seem to be interested at all. So we come up with them 'with' them (it's more like for them). Just makes the whole process uncomfortable and like you're wasting their time

Thanks for sharing this, Lidia. I completely understand why that would feel uncomfortable and frustrating. Not everyone is motivated by big career goals. It may help to focus instead on what they would like to improve, feel more confident in or make easier in their current role. The goal still needs to belong to them though, otherwise it can quickly become another task being done for them.

Great article as always! The link to the 90min 1:1 agenda isn’t there though (when I click I get the custard sales page).

Just following up, Maureen. Apologies, the page is a little confusing, but it does work once you enter your details.

Here is the direct link to the agenda as well:
